Frequently Asked Questions
Is FotoTagger free to use?
FotoTagger is totally free for personal use.
If you wish to use FotoTagger for business purposes please contact the developer for obtaining the business license.
What is a catch, why it's free?
This is a new way to annotate photos and images, based on a new standard for portable tags. The developer would like to promote this standard as an open to public. Please visit FotoTagger website to learn how you can help.
What is the difference between a caption and a tag?
A caption refers to the title of an image in general. Tags are usually annotations associated with some parts of the image.
Why do I see captions, I never created, when I use FotoTagger?
Image editing software often attaches captions to pictures and keeps them in a special section of the JPEG file called User Comment. If this is the case, then such captions can be viewed both by FotoTagger and that program.
What happens if I send a tagged picture to a person who doesn't have FotoTagger?
That person can see the picture but not your tags. In some cases this person can see caption if using software able to show captions.
Can I write tags outside of a given image?
Yes you can, but viewing your tags on the screen with different resolution can make some tags invisible. In this case FotoTagger will warn the user about the number of tags outside of the viewing area. Besides, some tags outside your image can be lost when you merge, email or blog it.
What is the strange symbol appearing over annotated photos, when I view my pictures with Windows Explorer in a thumbnail mode, and while opening files?
This is a special symbol to show the user which files are tagged in FotoTagger. It helps to identify annotated files even before launching FotoTagger.
I cannot find a tagged picture I have on my computer using FotoTagger, what should I do?
You need to rebuild the index, since the search function works with it. Each time you open or tag a picture in FotoTagger, the information is added to the search index automatically. Nevertheless in some cases the index can become out of date, especially if you make changes without using FotoTagger, like moving files between directories. Rebuilding the index could take a long time for a computer with thousands of files. You can continue your work, using a rebuild index in background mode. If you know in what folder the files should be you can add only this directory to index.
Which languages FotoTagger supports?
FotoTagger supports European languages, for example Spanish, German, Russian, etc. However, language support should be configured in Windows Control Panel / Regional and Language Options / Advanced. Asian languages are not supported yet. We will add Unicode support in the nearest version.
If I publish to blog images with annotations in German (or other European langauge) will my blog visitors see it alright?
Yes. FotoTagger stores annotations and publishes your content to blog in UTF-8 encoding. If you experience problems displaying national characters in your blog, please make sure you have your Blogger.com account Settings / Formatting / Encoding set to Universal (Unicode UTF-8) - this is the default Blogger.com setting.
Are my annotated images and text published to Blogger.com searchable?
Yes. If you make your blog publicly available other people will be able to find it using search engines. Web search engines and Google's Blogsearch shows annotations correctly. Technorati sometimes displays technical information which does not make any sense for users and is supposed to be hidden.
Are the blogs I publish with FotoTagger compatible with all browsers?
We tested blogging with latest versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Opera.
When I click on the published image on my blog page I can see a large image with annotations completely loaded but Explorer progress shows that only 10% are complete?
This is an issue in the Internet Explorer. It looks like we cannot fix it. Note that if you open same page again the progress bar will show 100% at once.
I often get "Blogger website is heavily loaded..." or "Blogger website is unavailable..." error when publising to blog. What's the matter?
This problem occurs because Blogger website does not accept photo and text uploads in its peak load times. You should retry publishing your post.
I get "MAPI Login failed" error when I try to email my picture from FotoTagger.
This problem usually occurs if you had Outlook (not Outlook Express!) installed and deinstalled it or decided to use different e-mial program as a default mail client. Reintslling Windows and never installing Outlook again helps. As a workaround, we suggest create a merged copy of your image on disk (Tools > Save Merged) and manually email it as an attachment from your email program.
My blog became corrupted after I edited one of my posts in Blogger.com Compose mode with Firefox. How to restore my blog?
Editing FotoTagger posts in Blogger.com compose mode from Firefox corrupts them and such posts cannot be deleted easily. To restore you blog, you need to manually delete corrupted posts: open each corrupted post, clean its text and save changes. After that you should be able to delete this post using Delete button at the right side of your posts lists on Blogger.com. If you would like to restore the deleted post, you will need to blog it from FotoTagger again. Please use Internet Explorer for editing FotoTagger posts until Blogger.com fixes this problem.
